May is almost over and before we go into June, let us share a list of the albums that were released this month and that stood out for us. Even if the list is shorter than the April’s one, we believe that each of the projects presented here are worth the detour.
Billie Eilish - HIT ME HARD AND SOFT
Many stated that this album could secure a Grammy for Billie Eilish, and we might have to agree.
In this third album, the pop singer shows her true vocal range, from a whispering voice to a belting one. Her brother Finneas, who is behind the production, managed to convey a hard and soft side like the title of the project suggests. We have everything in there: electronic sounds and synths, acoustic guitars, violins, groovy bass...
HIT ME HARD AND SOFT might be Billie Eilish’s best and most mature album so far.
Standout tracks: "LUNCH," "CHIHIRO", "BIRDS OF A FEATHER", "THE GREATEST", "BLUE".
Vince Staples - Dark Times
Have you ever listened to an album and felt it was too short? This is what Dark Times will do to you. Through 13 songs - including 2 skits! -, Vince Staples intertwines the scars of his past with the present maturity he has now gained, without any swagger or arrogance, but a chill and stark delivery emphasized by wavy beats. Dark Times is a digestible and cohesive album that we’ll come back to frequently, and it’s also the perfect way for Vince Staples to conclude his 10-year-old contract with the label Def Jam.
Standout tracks: "Black&Blue", "Government Cheese", "Étouffée", "Justin", "Little Homies".
The Marías - Submarine
Need a break from the chaos? Then Submarine is the perfect album for you.
The Marías’ pop is dreamy and transportive, while bringing introspective insight into what solitude and heartbreak feel like. We are grateful that María Zardoya, the lead vocalist, and Josh Conway, the drummer and brain behind the production, managed to put their break up behind to keep creating music. Once you dive into this smooth album - and into your inner world -, you could be surprised by what you might discover.
Standout tracks: "Echo", "Run Your Mouth", "Paranoia", "No One Noticed".
Bring Me The Horizon - POST HUMAN: NeX GEn
If you were expecting BMTH to stay in the same lane as their previous works, you will be disappointed. POST HUMAN: NeX GEn is an experimentation, where the band transcends genres but also musical eras, as most of the songs feel like a revival of 2000s rock/metal. We also got to enjoy interesting features, like “liMOusIne” with AURORA, or the absolute banger “AmEN! ”with Lil Uzi Vert. With this album, Bring Me The Horizon proves that they can evolve, while still creating catchy and quality songs.
Standout tracks: "YOUtopia", "liMOusIne", "AmEN!".
